Who We Are

Homeward Bound of Steubenville is an Ohio Nonprofit Corporation dedicated to serving the poor and homeless in Steubenville by providing low-barrier, transitional housing and customized, one-on-one community fellowship.

Our Story

From Homeward Bound's founder,
Suzie Jackson:

Too many poor and homeless hospital patients fall through the cracks. As an internal medicine physician assistant at Trinity West Hospital in Steubenville, I care for these men and women every day. Despite robust social work and case management support at the hospital, local emergency housing, and government-sponsored housing, many patients do not have a safe place to go on discharge. In September of 2024, after only 6 months working at Trinity, I knew I had to do something to help.

I had already planned a trip the following month to Calcutta, India to serve the “poorest of the poor” with Mother Teresa’s order, the Missionaries of Charity. During my time volunteering at the Home of the Dying (Nirmal Hriday), I was moved to found a nonprofit to help the “poorest of the poor in Steubenville.” After returning home, I met extensively with friends and community members about my plan. In my conversations, I discovered that there are many people in Steubenville who care about the poor but who need an invitation to serve. I found a common passion for serving the homeless in friends and board members Taylor Caputo and William Bednarz. Taylor, Will, and I founded Homeward Bound of Steubenville in January 2025.
